9:30 to 10:30 am - Using Technology To Tell the Story

Technology has come a long way.  It is used in all aspects of our lives.  Not surprisingly it has taken the history business by storm.

Ground Penetrating Radar, Lidar and even 3-D printing are now just a few of the new tools that historians and researchers are using to learn about and share the past.  Additionally, we will discuss creating and using a Museum Without Walls App that takes users on a six-stop, self-guided tour of Newport’s rich and important history. Users can listen to a short podcast about the historic site at each stop.

Lastly, we will discuss generative Artificial Intelligence, how it works, and how it can be utilized to create or inspire art.

Join our discussion of these new tools and how they are being used to help us do our jobs better.

12:05 to 1:05 pm - LUNCH and Don’t Believe the Hype: Overcoming Fear of Brownfield Redevelopment

This class will explore the basics of brownfield site identification, the assessment process, mitigation planning, cleanup potential, and resources at the local, state, and federal levels that can be used by developers working to redevelop historic properties identified as brownfields. As preservationists, municipalities, and developers work to redevelop historic sites and mitigate blight, a brownfield site can often be a deterrent due to both the unknown financial burden and the regulatory responsibility. It is not uncommon for an historic site to be a brownfield, as many remarkable buildings were purposed for uses other than what is planned for, or considered acceptable, today. The materials and systems used at the time the buildings were active under their original use often do not meet safety standards of today, but that does not necessarily mean their legacy of hazardous materials negates the potential of the site. This course will conclude with a short case study for the second New Riff Distillery rickhouse located in West Newport. This presentation will conclude with a brief discussion on the various financial and technical resources available for those working to redevelop brownfield sites.

1:20 to 2:50 pm - Brewery District: How Beer Saved a Neighborhood

The session will present the story of the Over-the-Rhine Brewery District. It will highlight the creation of the Brewery District Urban Redevelopment Corporation and the steps it has taken to redevelop and preserve a neighborhood that is filled with historic buildings associated with Cincinnati Brewing heritage. Steps that have been taken have included, master planning, creation of a new zoning designation, establishing a historic district (local and federal), historic signage, a brewery heritage trail, historic tours, and even putting on one of Cincinnati’s most unique traditions, Bockfest.  The session will also include case studies of the redevelopment of historic brewery buildings from both an architect and engineer that have worked on plans and stabilization of brewery buildings.
