Photographs will be used to illustrate the different construction methods and why that affect utility bills, drafty rooms, and the overall comfort in your home. You will be shown an easy way to determine whether or not you have heat gains or losses and the best practices for correcting those gains or losses. Plaster Repair

As we all know, maintaining & repairing the plaster in our historic homes can be a challenge. Come learn how to deal with fixing basic plaster issues such as mending cracks and restoring damaged plaster in your historic home.

Color Me Good

Does your house need to be painted? Do you not know where to start with picking paint colors? Then this session is for you. We will go over the basics and history of paint, some basics on paint preparation, and then go over what colors go with what styles. An added bonus bring your house and get advice on what colors would work for you.

Buying Historic Properties Using Renovation Financing

Presenters: Rebecca Weber & Stef Adams

We will explore current market conditions and walk attendees through the buying process utilizing 203k Renovation Financing, specifically in Historic Districts. We will also cover How and why to inspect the physical condition as well as discuss the important topic of proper insurance during and after the construction process.

Two case studies will be shown – one on a current project currently underway in the Dayton Street Historic District in OTR and the other on Why you should never sweat the replacement cost.

Look Up! Don’t Miss the Ornaments Above You.

Presenter: Terry Wullenweber

Presentation will describe recent projects which include a variety of ornamental plaster restoration projects. Visuals will be shown of problem-solving techniques used. The tools, equipment used as well as methods for mold-making, pouring molds and creating large ornamental medallions will be on display as well as demonstrated. Participants can try pouring small ornaments for "make and take" and try their hand at a bench run cornice.

National Register of Historic Places

Presenter: Wes Cunningham

Learn about what the National Register is and what is does and doesn’t now do. This session will go over the process and the type of research that is needed for a nomination to the National Register. You will also learn why this designation is important for a property owner including insurance, permitting exemptions (flood plain, conservation easements, code review on work, tax credits, and Section 106 protections.

Sh** Happens: Tips on Conquering Unexpected Repair and Maintenance in Your Home

Tina and John love old homes. That said, after 23 years of marriage, they have rehabbed and restored three homes, one newer and two over a hundred years old. They have wisdom to share regarding the how-tos of repair and maintenance of an old home without dashing your dreams. 

Repairing Brick & Repointing Masonry

Presenter: David Lamb

Learn about all aspects of brick and masonry from this veteran mason. The session will demonstrate common brick repairs and discuss the importance of using historically appropriate techniques and building materials when conducting masonry repairs on your historic home. 

PAINTED BRICK

Presenter: Duffy Hoffman

Learn from a preservation and paint expert on the best treatments for brick and the surprising functionality of how it breathes. Find tips on how to best approach brick that is painted, coated or remaining in its original condition. Doing sensitive work is crucial to your and your house's health.

Box Gutters

Presenter: Eric Hempleman, Hempleman Contracting

Eric will share some of his experience regarding historic roofing systems and box gutters from over the years working with homeowners and fellow tradesmen. He has been in the field working on slate, tile, and metal roofs and gutters for 7+ years; priding himself and Hempleman Contracting as being part of Cincinnati’s future of historic preservation. This presentation will focus on box gutter systems and the correct installation of these systems.

Local Historic Districts: The essentials you need to know

Presenters: Scott Clark, Kaitlin Bryan, and Beth Johnson

Learn about what a local historic district is and why it is important to saving our historic fabric. A panel from local preservation offices will be present to talk about their historic district and the things you need to know as a resident of one.

Applying for Historic Tax Credits

Presenters: Katie B. Wilborn

State and Federal Tax Credits - Considering doing some work on your historic building? You may qualify for an up to 30% KY tax credit for homeowners or an up to 20% tax credit for income-producing properties.  An overview of the State and Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit programs’ eligibility, submittal process, standards, and best practices. Rehabilitation Tax Credits are voluntary, financial incentives to encourage investment in historic properties. 

Everyday People, Life in Covington 1850-1920 (or Who lived in my house?)

Presenter: Jeannine Kreinbrink, MA, RPA

Using archaeological excavations in east Covington, we will explore the history of several households through time.  The landowner was not always the occupant; many landowners in Covington rented out their houses, or even individual rooms to lodgers. We will explore different ways to search for the owners and/or occupants of older properties.
